Resolutions for tax and accounting professionals

Some New Year’s Resolutions for Tax and Accounting Professionals

  • January 13, 2023

Well, it’s officially 2023, and lots of people seem to be buzzing with renewed energy for self-improvement. If you've already begun that endeavor, maybe you’ve already started working on your own resolutions (yes, we tax professionals often have our own set of resolutions to bring into reality). Since the new year is typically a time of personal reflection, it's also a great time to think about professional resolutions. To that end, here are seven resolutions for tax and accounting professionals to consider this year.

Tax season resolutions

1. You can go ahead and plan for a smoother tax season. For those who manage a tax practice, it may be helpful to plan an annual meeting with all employees so that everyone can brainstorm how to make processes and procedures better before tax season starts. Often tax staff and administrative employees have a lot of suggestions for improvement.

2. Commit to maintaining work-life balance. Even if you work a ton during the busy season, set limits. For example:

  • Never work past midnight
  • Have dinner with your family three times a week
  • Don’t check your work email while you are with family or friends

3. Come up with a team flexibility plan. For example, have certain nights during the week when people can go home early, eat dinner with their family, and work from home later that night.

Efficiency resolutions

4. Get your CPE credits done early. Make getting CPE credits a priority so that you’re not scrambling at the end of the year.

5. Learn how to use technology more effectively. Make a goal to learn how to more effectively use technology or find better tools to help manage your workload and practice more efficiently.

6. Become more efficient at one task. Identify a task that you do 10 times per day and figure out a way to do it just a little bit more efficiently. The time savings add up over weeks and months.

Growth resolutions

7. Provide more value to your clients. As tax preparation is becoming more and more commoditized, offering other services will help you stand out and add value to your clients. Tax resolution is a great opportunity to do this.
